Tell us a little about who you are. Who do you work for? What job do you do?
Hi , I am Rahul Sharma from Shahdara , Delhi. I am an artist , Works mostly in digital medium.I work as an Freelance artist for various comics I.e Diamond Comics.

How did you get started as a comic artist?
I always loved comics,And wanted to choose comic making as a profession, so I practiced a lot and make myself able to meet the company standard and applied for few online small web comics and just in another I was making them.

What obstacles, if any, have you encountered along the way?
Well there were few obstacles. Some were big and some small.. i.e. the main obstacle was in starting is to make my parents believe that this is a serious business and one can earn his living by making comics , As in my family and I think most of the families have a mindset that if you’ll do engineering or doctorate etc. then only you are a success.. so I worked and when they see others praising me for my work and also paying for it then I think I proved my point.

What was the hardest technique for you to learn as a comic artist?
Everything is hard but when you learn it , becomes easy , this statement is very true, In also comic world .But As I observe others , They have a real hard time in making right panels to convey there story But after reading so many comics in my childhood I think I learnt now how to set the panel camera etc. This was quite difficult.

Where was your first comic work published?
My first Comic was submitted to comic studio named “215ink” and the comic named was “The Night Exterminators “. It was not very big And I think they even had removed it.

What are some of the resources you’ve found most helpful?
On Internet Art community websites like “ Deviant Art.com“ and “ ConceptArt.org”  These are very helpful for learning and for inspiration to continue working. And In books “Andrew loomis’s anatomy books, victor perard anatomy books and sketching from live people and from photos.

What equipment and materials do you use?
As I work on digitally. My most important equipment is my Wacom tablet, My Core i7, Photoshop CS3 (for me versions doesn’t matter and this version is used by for a long time kind of become habitual of it ) and forever champ my old pencil and paper.

Do you do your coloring by hand or on the computer?
Mainly on Computer.

If you do your coloring by hand, what do you use?
As I told I don’t color my hand drawings mostly but if rarely I color then I’ll use mostly pencil colors for shading and effects.

What thing do you hate to draw?
For drawing its nothing .Drawing is my portal to leave behind everything , every problem , When I Draw My main focus is only on what I am drawing I just cut myself from the world and that’s why there is nothing I hate about drawing.

What is or was your favorite comic strip?
There are so many but currently Dan luvisi’s “Last man standing”, “The Carnage series” done by Clayton Crane and “Superman peace on earth” done by Alex ross.

Do you feel that the Internet is a blessing or a curse?
For it’s a blessing as whatever I learnt is from internet. Its all depends on how you use it. It is like a knife sharp on both ends.

Who in your life is/was the most supportive of your art?
I can answer this without even thinking MY WHOLE FAMILY is my back bone for whatever I am doing right now or will do in future. They are very Supportive for me. If I’ll be skyscraper then they forever will be that main base, that solid base which supports and helps that skyscraper to stand. As they all are supportive but my sisters helped me a lot means I remember when I started and told my father about all this there was my sister who supported me with keeping a blind faith in my decision.

Have you ever taught drawing and if so did you enjoy the experience?
Yeah , if anyone need any advice on something in drawing and they feel that I can help them then surely and I enjoy helping them.

Do you feel that talent or passion is more important in drawing?
I think to improve drawing or say in any profession to improve your skills , to get better in it, you need to do it for countless hours. You have to practice it And if you’ll not be passionate about what you do you’ll get bored from it and will not do it. So yes passion and talent is more important in ….

If you were an animated cartoon character who do you think you would be?
Two characters I really want to be first is wolverine from “The Xmen” and The hulk.

In one or two sentences describe your drawing area.
My Drawing area would be drawing scary and gross stuff.

Who is your favorite artist?
So many I think currently “Dan luvisi” and “ Dave Rapoza”.

What opportunities do you see for those interested in being as a comic artist?
There are so many. Apart from making comics ,They can work as an story board artist for movies , they can work for advertisement companies make there posters and other marketing stuff , surely can be Concept artist for Games and movies etcetc there are so many opportunities.

Thank you Rahul for sharing your experiences with us and all the very best for your future endeavors.
