Nickelodeon celebrates Philadelphia’s Neha Gupta as the Halo Effect Award Receipient for june

As part of Nickelodeon’s ongoing commitment to encourage young people to take positive action in their communities, the network today announced Neha Gupta of Philadelphia, Pa., as its June HALO Effect award recipient. Selected for her impressive work as an advocate for orphaned children, upta will be featured in an on air spot on TeenNick and highlighted on TeenNick.com throughout the month. In addition, HALO Effect will award a $5,000 grant to Empower Orphans, a charity chosen by Gupta.

HALO Effectis a year-round initiative that recognizes one deserving teen every month for their work to help and lead others (HALO) in their community.The initiative was first announced by Nick Cannon, creator, host and executive producer of the annual TeenNick HALO Awards during the live broadcast in November 2013. This month marks the sixth HALO Effectaward that Nickelodeon has distributed.

Gupta is a 17-year old high school senior from Yardley, Pa., who has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of orphans at home and abroad. In 2005, at just nine years old, Gupta established mpower

Orphans, a non-profit organization that focuses on supplying orphans with educational resources and supplies, and provides them with access to medical care including immunizations.

Through Empower Orphans, Gupta established a library and computer center in a Philadelphia school and hospital respectively, and provided more than 150 vanloads of home furnishings to help improve the living conditions of innercity Philadelphia children. In addition to building four libraries, three computer labs, a science lab and a sewing center in northern India, the organization has co

nducted a fourday eye and dental camp, sponsored surgeries for polio victims, spread awareness about oral cancer among children, and installed water wells and filtration systems in the region. To date, Empower Orphans has raised over $1.3 million and impacted more than 25,000 orphans in northern India and the Philadelphia area.
