Tell us a little about who you are. Who do you work for? What job do you do?
I am Raj Bhagat from Jammu &Kashmir , I love music, dancing, singing, acting and also do theatres. Currently I am working with Kashmir Times.
At what age did you start drawing?
I started drawing from my childhood ..i use to play with brush and colours during my childhood. My neighbor is a painter and I really enjoy when see him painting.
How did you start your carrier in cartooning?
I do sketches and love drawing …I remember the day when ,I was sitting on my Terrace and painting. when suddenly my uncle came and toldme ,why don’t u try in newspapers . He told me to send my bio data to newspapers and I did it.. after one month they replied ….and I was offered a job of cartoonist.
What obstacles, if any, have you encountered along the way?
A very good question …during those days when I just started my carrier, I was financially unstable. Due to which it was difficult for me to arrange for the proper equipment’s to show my talent. But I somehow overcame those challenges and my hard work rewarded me well.
What was the hardest technique for you to learn as a cartoonist?
Graph. I must say doing paintings or cartooning graphically was hardest technique for me.
What cartoonist has inspired you the most?
Walt Disney (the god of cartoons) ….. he is my idol his cartoons really inspired mealot I really love his work and I wish If I could be a cartoonist like him.
What equipment and materials do you use?
I use pencils and sketch pens for making CARTOONS
Where do your ideas for cartoons come from?
I get ideas from public places and news …sometime my ideas come from my dreams, so when I wakeup in the morning the first thing I do is, I write down the vision and then put it on canvas
How technology has impacted your work?
Technology is really a boon for me like anyone else. It has helped me to do my work faster and easier. It also helps me to create a perfect picture of my vision.
What future do you see for those interested in being a cartoonist?
I think cartooning really has a bright future specially with animation coming into field. I think we all enjoy watching cartoon. Nowadays with growing technology and 3d images, I think it really has bright future.
Raj, would you say that you have reached your goal?
No…because I think learning is a lifelong process. There are so many things introduced every day. And I like learning and making progress every day. So I think it’s a journey that I am enjoying without thinking about destination.
