More Than 1,500 Students From Over 350 Universities Across India Register to Compete in NVIDIA’s CUDA Coding Challenge
GOA, India—HiPC—19 December, 2014—NVIDIA®today announced the winners of the NVIDIA CUDA® Coding Challenge, the first event of its kind created to identify India’s most talented and innovative parallel programmers.
Open to all students pursuing higher education in the fields of engineering and science, the CUDA Coding Challenge enabled some of the nations’ top up-and-coming application developers to demonstrate their skills in programming NVIDIA GPU accelerators using the NVIDIA CUDA parallel programming model.
CUDA is an important element of the NVIDIA accelerated computing platform, the leading platform for accelerating data analytics and scientific computing. It enables programmers to achieve dramatic increases in computing performance by harnessing the power of NVIDIA GPU accelerators.
The top three winners of the competition were recognized at the High Performance Computing Conference (HiPC) this week by Shanker Trivedi, vice president of Worldwide Field Operations at NVIDIA.
“I am greatly impressed with the caliber and creativity of these students,” said Trivedi.“This challenge provides talented programmers the opportunity to test and hone their parallel programming skills, and prepares them to help tackle tomorrow’s most difficult computational challenges by harnessing the power of GPU-accelerated computing.”
More than 1,500 students from over 350universities across India registered for the CUDA Coding Challenge event. The top three winning teams each received a share of cash prizes totaling ?100,000:
- First prize: Dhruv Kohli and Vedant Kohli, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati
- Second prize: Vaneet Yadav and Amish Mittal, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati
- Third prize: Raghavendra K., Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
The contestants were required to parallelize a sequential algorithm and optimize it using CUDA C/C++ to get the best performance on an NVIDIA Tesla® GPU accelerator. Winning teams were selected by a panel of experts based on programming accuracy, speed and quality, and on how well they optimized the use of the GPU accelerator.
Vishal Dhupar, managing director of South Asia at NVIDIA, said, “We are thankful to the students and professors for their excellent response. This is a step forward in the right direction and we are confident that such programs will generate further innovation around GPU computing in India.”
