Filminute 2013 launches its 8th edition with 25 ultra short films from 19 countries competing for Best Filminute and People's Choice awards. September 1-30 at http://www.filminute.com.

The 8th edition of Filminute, the international one-minute film festival, officially launches this week. A record 19 countries from 5 continents are represented among the festival’s 25 competing finalists.

The 19 countries represented at Filminute 2013 are Argentina (2), Belarus, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Martinique, Netherlands (2), Norway, Romania, Russia, Scotland, South Africa, Sweden, UK (3), and USA (3).

This year 3 documentaries and 2 animations are included in the mix of 25 films in competition.
Filmmakers the world over, as well as those who made this year’s prestigious 25-film shortlist, will no doubt be impressed by the jury that festival co-founder and Head of Jury John Ketchum has assembled this year: acclaimed American screenwriter and director Richard Linklater; advertising maven and Grey, New York President and COO, Tor Myhren; FIPRESCI film critic and Dazed & Confused Magazine Film Editor, Carmen Gray; Orange prize-winning author of The Tiger’s Wife, Téa Obreht; and Jeremy Azevedo, Senior Director of Original Programming at Machinima, the video entertainment network.

The “Best Filminute” prize and 5 Commendations will be awarded by the Filminute jury. The public at large is invited to view, share, comment upon and rate all 25 films. Each film fan is also entitled to a single vote to put toward the film they feel is most deserving of Filminute’s People’s Choice award.

“Social media played a big role in the success of Filminute last year, and this year contributed to a dramatic rise in submissions and pre-festival chatter,” says Filminute co-founder Sabaa Quao. “Judging from the activity we’ve seen already from some of this year’s shortlisted filmmakers, social media has definitely become the “go-to” method for marketing indie films. For a festival that grows via social media sharing of films, we couldn’t be happier with this marketing evolution.”

The 8th edition of the festival features an even more impressive list of global media partners as well as the introduction of the CineCoup award, which will put $2,500 (CAD) in the hands of one of the 2013 shortlisted filmmakers. CineCoup, a Canadian-based film accelerator which launched this year and delivers production financing and guaranteed distribution to indie filmmakers, will announce the award at the Filminute Awards, October 9th.

Every year, throughout the month of September, Filminute presents an extraordinary array of 25 films online for festival-goers around the world to enjoy, share, and discuss. The Filminute winners and awards will be announced on October 9.
